Tons of returned emails using email users from admin

I'm using the 1.3/1.3.1 version.  When I send out an email to all users from admin about 50% come back "RETURNED".  I have noticed that a lot of them say something like "it is likely that the server did not like something in your header, or it looked suspicious."  Anyway, not sure if this is a bug but just seemed odd to be getting around 800 return emails when most of my users signed up when I required email verification.

Um 800?  If they are returned then it's not an SE bug.  Could be a problem on your PHP set up or the users could very well not have valid addresses.

Thanks for the reply Jeff.  These are all things I thought of also, but here are some things that complicate the matter a bit.

- I rarely received a returned email before the update to 1.3.
- About 80% of the users signed up at a time when I had email verification on (email password on signup), requiring a valid email to access the boards.  While it's possible perhaps even likely that some of these emails have since been closed, I doubt almost 800 of 1500 users have in a matter of 3 months.
- No PHP has been edited in terms of the email users option.
- Some of the transcripts of the returned mails said that "it is likely that the server did not like something in your header, or it looked suspicious"
- The email addresses were also in a valid format. ([email protected])

have you in settings set a answer mail? it seems to me that the mails was returned cause you have only your smtp server in the header! many pop server use AntiSpamTechnolgy and i think this technology thinks that you are  using a  bulkmail proggie!

Hello mediman,
Yes, I have [email protected] as my webmaster email address (in admin).  I am currently using sendmail.  I could try using smtp instead if that will help.

Here is one of the headers successfully sent to a dummy email account on my domain (my server aparently does not have any spam protection hehe):

Return-Path: <[email protected]>
Delivered-To: [email protected]
Received: (qmail 28018 invoked by uid 3009); 27 Apr 2002 21:50:23 -0000
Date: 27 Apr 2002 21:50:23 -0000
Message-ID: <[email protected]>
To: [email protected]
Subject: EzDSS Discussion Forums: EzDSS's Response to the Supreme Court Ruling
From: [email protected]

Hope maybe this will clarify things.  <[email protected]> looks like it could cause problems I am guessing, but I am not sure.  If so, how would I change this to reflect a fake ID?

the message id is something inserted by PHP rather than by YaBB SE - I'm not sure if it can be avoided...

I'm starting to get a lot of returned e-mails too!  Most... distasteful...  My errors do not relate to spam, they relate to users changing their e-mail address after they registered to something that isn't an e-mail address (I should lock that down), and for exceeding quota on their e-mail address.

So, I have a mod/feature request!  Tell me where to pass this along to, by the way...

Administrative Lock-Down -- Administrator recieved a notice stating that your e-mail is either wrong or not working right now.  Hence, they have prevented you from registering for any notifications what-so-ever through e-mail.  All notifications you have signed up for before you have been un-signed up for.  In order to get your permissions back, you must discuss why your e-mail is incorrect with the forum administrator.  In order to prevent this from happening again, KEEP A CURRENT E-MAIL ADDRESS ON FILE!  Thanks!

there exist always a function in settings "Email new password if a user changes his/her email address?", so that emails can´t be fakes!

the prob is an antispam prob or a php misconfiguration!

The way it should work is inorder to change your e-mail a message is sent to your new address which requires you to confirm the change.
