Admin erases my SETTINGS.php =P

Installing was quete some work and instead of the normal instalation proces I had to eddit my preferences file manually, but every time I try to edit my preferneces in the Admin section it now just empties the whole file and my forum crashes...
I'm not really a expert, bust something tells me that this is not supposed to be happening ::)

We don't have a preferences.php file, I assume you mean Settings.php?

Just a second ago my whole forum crashed and I saw that out of the blue my whole settings file had been returned to it's begin-state..... uploaded my back-up and the forum was working again.... very, very strange
And still I can't alter my preferences in Admin or it erases the fil....
Is there no-one that has any idea what this could be??

Make sure you have a settings.bak file, and CHMOD your settings.php file to 777
