Membergroup Management

Hi folks,
I recently had to create a membergroup for each member of my forum. See, here's my problem...

I run a forum for role-playing games, and the people who play them (for the Lower Mainland of BC anyway) and part of the package is that games that are currently running get their own board in order to post details such as awarded experience, gaming times, questions for the GM et cetera.

If all the boards were visible this would make for one horribly long forum!! So I put each game board in it's own category (this also allows people to discuss the possibility of one user or another joining their game in private "what do you think of Joe?").

No problem.

Except that many of the people around here join more than one game.

So if I have 2 games running, that is three membergroups I need to create.
1. one for anyone in GameA
2. one for anyone in GameB
3. one for anyone in GameB AND GameA

Started out as not too much of a problem... but now there are 5 private boards for 5 different games.

Pheng plays in the Star Wars game and Forge of Fury, Drill Sergeant plays in Star Wars and Sunless Citadel... *bangs her head on the desk*.

What I would like to see is a Membergroup Management Center... where the admin (possibly Global Moderators) can add users to memergroup LISTS.

I would be able to create several groups (in this case one for each private gaming board) and add users to those lists. Much like how membergroups are currently granted access to the categories (click on the ! and select the membergroups from a list).

It's important to be able to add one member to more than one membergroup... just as you are able to allow one membergroup access to more than one category.

I have no idea how difficult this would be to make, but if anyone is up to the challenge, feel free to let me know. (Please also don't hold back if it's completely impossible and it's just wishful thinking!)

Regards,
Ruth

I would try using a thread for this information, it works actually... but, I guess a board is okay.

In the next release you could just do it with child boards - have a Games board and the games inside it.  Each board also has it's own group permissions.  Bam - done.

I can already tell you that we've considered multiple groups per user and it was turned down, might still be a mod or come in later just before the final beta phase.

Not that hard... you might try looking at the Allowed User mod for now, until the next relase is out.

Thanks [Unknown],
I didn't really expect I'd get a mod out of my post lol

The child boards thing could work (although I'd have to include the collapse category mod, or I'm back to the same problem of having about a mile of scroll to find your board).

As for using a thread, no can do... in each game there is about 30 posts a day... asking questions of the DM, posting game times, requesting special items, discussing events (I could go on and on and on and on, they do lol). This is why I created the seperate boards... after creating a few boards I realized how incredibly long it was and so did the seperate categories.

What I'm doing now works fine, each member has their own group... for example, my username is ruth_n_alan, so my membergroup is _ruth_n_alan (I have to put an underscore in the front in order to prevent getting a "that name is reserved" error... don't know why, but I do!) Then I simply type in the username (with the underscore at the front) in the category access when someone joins a game.

To keep track of it all I have the DM's maintain a list for me, adding or deleting people as they go. It's sort of high maintenance but it works.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Ruth

One more thing:
"In the next release you could just do it with child boards - have a Games board and the games inside it.  Each board also has it's own group permissions.  Bam - done."

Wouldn't I run into the same problem? having to create a membergroup for childboardA, childboardB and then one for people who are permitted to access A and B?

But if people could be in multiple membergroups, you wouldn't.

So, like this:

General Category
- General Chit Chat
- Ongoing Games
   + Star Wars
   + Some Other RP
   + Blah
- Site Suggestions and Feedback

The BoardIndex would only look like this:

General Category
- General Chit Chat
- Ongoing Games
- Site Suggestions and Feedback

And then the scrolling problem would be solved.

As far as the groups, if multiple groups are included it would solve you some problems - one group per game.

Ruthie,

Try this instead of creating member groups

http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?board=158;action=display;threadid=9202

It allows you to designate which users have access to specific boards or categories.  You can even make it so that people who don't have access to a section don't have it displayed in their browser.

Hey guys,
That works great (I installed Super Mod the other day). I didn't realize that the "Allowed User Configuration" could also be used to make them invisible. It's exactly what I needed!

Galt: thanks for stepping up. The advice is treasured, even if I did get the same answer a little sooner ;)
