By the way the problem is quite real... I personally saw complaints even about admin stars!

This is not true.  Your browser, in the interest of not being completely moronic, will only download it once.  (being the same image.)

No, not the star images, but HTML TAGS THEMSELVES!!! He already turned off image download completely...

I guess he had really bad phone line problem for a few years or so and it turned him into html optimization maniac. :-\

heh, you must have a really big url to have a 90byte image tag. anyway, even on a 24.4, that takes so little time you wouldn't even notice it. if he doesn't like seeing images, tell him to surf on lynx or something.

Img tags here are exsactly 85 b and the URL of that site was a bit longer.

Anyway, if majority of my site's audience had really low bandwidth I'd rather use something simplier as a forum engine, not YSE or PHPBB  :-\

But sure, bandwidth and server load saving options would be welcome.   ;)

Okay, I agree that removing image tags would help for some people but not all that noticeable. The major difference would be to remove the images themselves.

Another reason for this is that a lot of my users use annoying and/or large avatars and signature images.  I would like the ability for my users (and myself) that aren't interested in seeing them to have them disabled.

You can easily set a size restriction for avatar images that'll check every time they change them. That means that it won't just resize it, it'll make sure it's actually the size that you prefer. There could also be a mod to take all image tags out of sigs if you wanted it.

That imposes on other users that don't mind seeing them though.

I just tell my users that if they want to put an image by their posts, the avatar is the place to do it. I even put a 50 pixel height limit on sig pics(not coded or anything. :P) That was after one user had sig pics the full height of a screen that took ages to download on 56k. To each his own I suppose. I would be interested in making a mod that, right before the page is sent, if the user has the option turned on, removes all image tags. I'll experiment and see if I can come up with anything that you were talking about. This could indeed save a lot of bandwidth, if users decide to implement it, but I have a feeling that I'd be writing a mod to one user. ;)

Whoa! :o

Those regular expressions sure are hard to learn(but oh so worth it!)

Anyhow, I've figured out how to remove every image tag in the forum, except for the ones embedded in the template. I'll work on that later, and then implement a per user option for it. Just a note, on the front page, it lowers the page size from 43kb to 39kb. Not that much, but a learning experience. ;)

My Signature Image Control mod might cater for your signature needs... it doesn't do anything to the avatars though!

There should be an additional option for the signatures:
to show signatures, but without the images

means

  • Show Avatars    Yes - No
  • Show Signatures  Yes - Yes, but no Images - No
So the User have 3 3 options for the Show signatures option instead of 2.

I guess that would use strip_tags... ie.

$signature = strip_tags($signature, '<a><i><b><u><s><pre><sup><sub><table><tr><td><font><li><ul>');

Or something like that.....
