Security Question?

I got a rather rude email from someone claiming to be able to hack the BB in less than 10 seconds and that it would be no prob to take down the website,of course I told them to go for it, and of course it hasn't happened (yet).

Now I now that any site is vulnerable to one degree or another but how does this YABBSE 1.4.1 rate? This concern comes from the fact that I have a private section for member groups that I'd prefer to stay that way.

Thanks...

Well unless they have access to your database or pc, or ftp... they wouldn't be able to do much unless they could guess your admin accounts password.

YaBBSE is really secure as long as the admin knows what he is doing and doesn't do stupid things like put an easy admin password such as "god" or something.

Also another security problem I have seen exploited is, after installing the board, even though the instructions say to remove install.php... some people don't remove it... and I have seen a hacker use it to gain an admin account and break into somebodies board... so do remember to always delete that file.

Yes, so far I have not seen any real security holes to date in SE. A couple of bugs let others read your IM in an earlier version but to date nobody has come out and shown a real hole so to speak...

Hey thanks for your responses....

This probably goes without saying but I'll ask anyway. Renaming the install.php with a different extention should be adequate shouldn't it?

ya, your right... I was just curious if by renaming it was adequate. I did nuke it, I guess I was being a bit of a pack rat by holding onto it. I did have it renamed with a different extension as well (I just checked it), but ya what's the point. ::)

Changing the extension would probably be ok but why chance anything? ;)
