how about a mod for yabbse whereby each topic on the forum has a checkbox where a user can check to say they have read it, and another checkbox somewhere else where the user can specify if they want the read topics displayed. If a person then replies to one of the 'hidden' topics then that topic is displayed again with the new reply.
This would cut down the shear amount of posts on busy forums for those members that don't visit regularly.
The suggestion I was originally given would have hidden the individual posts on the forum as well as the topics so a person could read down the topic and then mark how far they had read (say with a radio button or check box)
I dont know how much extra pressure this would put on the server but tailoring the message display would make it easier to keep track of unread posts.
