You could remove the MSN tag from your template...I do believe that should help.

The MSN icons are just icons aren't they? They don't do anything or do they?

Disable it in XP.. then use trillian for your IM needs.  It allows one to simultaneously use MSN-, AOL-, Yahoo- and ICQ chat plus IRC (which may not be a plus given the limited IRC interface).   One may additionally be on a given IM service with several identities simultaneously.  Its both free (no spyware) and ad-free:

I moved to Trillian as well, much better than using MSN and ICQ at the same time ;)

Yup, trillian rules! Unfortunatley I have to keep AIM/MSN around for voice chat.
