Well the good thing about the approach Greg is taking is that someone could easily change the board layout files. I've done some changing of the current YaBB layout and well it isn't much fun.

each tag should consist of smaller tags which would be comprised of HTML.  Or you can just take the HTML route.

Yes - all font tags will be eliminated!

We're abandoning Nutscrape 4.7 support as well - very few people are using it and we want to move on and get those few remaining people to do the same.

We'll probably be coding in XHTML for the final version.

True groundup, but some of these new standards also address usability for handicapped folks.

Which means fonts that scale in IE with Text Size adjustments, proper use of <th> and <caption> and summary= in tables, and proper use of tables period. Tables shouldn't really be used for layout, but for presenting data (usually from a db, but not necessarily). The main table around the messages and the boards and categories is fine, but nesting the tables 3 deep simply for border effects is not. It's technically not against the standards, it just poor practice nowadays.

Also remember that some handicaps make using a graphical browser useless, so make sure if an image has a purpose, it has an alt= too. All those title= and summary= and captions and things makes it easier for someone using a speech synthesizer to find their way around the page quickly. And make sure nothing requires a mouse, and only a mouse, since some folks can't use them, and do the equivalent of TABBING through a page to get to hyperlinks.

It may sound like a PITA, but it really isn't. If you stick to the CSS/HTML/XML standards, you need to add only a few more things for Priority 1 Accessibility (more only if you want even stricter adherance to them). You can view the standards here: http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/ and here: http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT-TECHS/.

Just to address those conerns Mad Moya:
* All fonts will use relative sizes (%ages), to allow IE to scale them (Mozilla can scale fixed sizes ;) )
* We'll probably reduce the tabling to speed up page rendering
* We are aiming to be as compliant as possible so alt attributes, captions etc will all be in there.
* I'll be making sure that tab orders are set so we don't have to tab through the YABBC tags and smilies. (This annoys me)

Last semester I did a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) module and really liked it, I've bought Jakob Nielsen's "Designing Web Usability" and read it 4 days. I'm really keen to make v2 very user friendly.

Other things on my hit list:
* Avoiding having blue hyperlinks on in blue backgrounds in posts! (That's just nasty)
* Uncluttering the interface, while maintaining functionality.
e.g.
QuoteCheck this if you wish to be notified of replies to this topic.
Check this if you'll be adding code (or don't like smilies).
Will be replaced with context sensitive help (i.e. popups) this will make it clearer for experts, while allowing newbies to find out what things do.

v2 will succeed in all areas!

I just thought I'd put my .02 in here.

I use Kate, and occasionally Kwrite. I don't really use any other editors, they work really nice. The thing I like about Kate is that it's Kwrite but you can have multiple documents open at once. It works really nice for when you have to switch documents really quickly but don't want to go to the panel. Sorta like tabbed browsing in Mozilla.

XHTML is in 1.5, most images have alt tags. There are several that don't. If you want, we can fix that now. About my post before, that is something different. That is a different templating structure which (I believe) will be in 2

I realized you were talking about v2, and as I said, where do I sign up? :)

I guess if I'd been a beta tester of v1.5.x, I would have a shot at v2... that is if it's even in the alpha or beta testing stages yet????
