I have a board running on my own machine for testing purposes, and have added a few things, like a query-counter. That vB has one, and says it took 20 queries to render their board-index. Mine, which has fewer boards takes about 100 queries, and about 11 seconds pre-caching (about 2-3 seconds after it's been loaded, and, I assume the tables are cached), and that's with the extra database keys suggested somewhere around. (Similar figures for the message-index pages for both boards)

Assuming that the vB board counts every query (mine should do, as it uses the Questions server variable, and confirmed by the MySQL log file) then it's not too surprising that YaBB SE is slower than vB - it uses almost 5 times as many queries per page!

Incidentally, my site was kicked off its last webhost because the servers just couldn't handle the load at peak times (50-100 users online)

In fact, joseph did some EXTENSIVE work on the quries on the BoardIndex for SE 2 and the count is very low now...I don't remember the number offhand but it is right around the vB number.

The "fat" version was 16 queries.
By fat I mean when you're logging in and have all the board index features turned on.

THe "thin" version (just a run-of-the mill view with the features off) was 12 queries.

The guest viewer version was 11 queries.

Will 1.4 incorporate some of these BoardIndex optimizations?

We're really running into serious connection problems now and Hostway just keeps on throwing the blame back to YaBB. They actually suggested that I should consider changing my board script. :P

1.4 does not contain code optimization of this sort.  Have you done what was said in this thread yet? http://www.yabb.info/community/index.php?board=163;action=display;threadid=6599

Yup, I've been monitoring that thread for some time now. I posted the following inquiry just this week:
Quote from: firewired on May 28, 2002, 05:39:21 PMI optimized PinoyDVD using the supplied scripts and the speed up was dramatic for a while. Last week, we suddenly began to experience the too many connections error with increasing frequency. This happens regardless of the number of people who are online. I ran the monthly optimize script last weekend and it helped a bit.

Now the errors are back and the board is slowing down again so much so that people are starting to notice:

Site Feedback

I just ran the optimize script again for good measure. Aside from this, is there anything else that can be done?

We're on a premium plan with Hostway by the way and we've never had problems with them. Just to make sure, I've filed a trouble ticket there as well.

When a site is slow like that and there are hardly any users online, I tend to believe it is the host. Our server runs just fine here with more action then there is going on currently in that forum and it's dead slow.

That being said, we do know that there are some areas that could use some serious optimization - and we're addressing that.

Even the Mod Writers are being lashed out at for using too many queries (thanks Joseph!)
He's very serious about keeping queries low.
One very nice feature Jeff 'n' Joseph are adding is broken down queries (You better still be!) which will allow mod writers to edit existing queries without slowing yabb down. 1.4 won't have it obviously, but SE2 will. ;)

Thanks for all the input. We're all waiting for 1.4 over here and hoping for the best. We're also considering switching hosts soon since Hostway is so uncooperative now.

As per their last message, they insist that they have a standard policy of 10 simultaneous MySQL connections per shared account and we're going over that limit. Sounds fishy considering that we've been with them for several months and have never had this problem before.

10 connections? Um, that is horrible, I suggest moving on...

Like what if you have 60 users online in ANY software? That's absurd.

yes.
Just to update you on this I've added the improved boardindex.php and it removed between 70% and 85% of the queries depending on the number of boards and the board settings/
