Because VBulletin is a solid piece of software.  If someone has the money, VBulletin is a good solution.  When you can afford to have several people coding as their full time jobs, you're bound to end up with decent software.

The problem with VB I find is it doesnt keep track of read/unread threads/forums as well as YaBB se which makes it a pain in the arse,,,

That might be so, but it harms the open source comunity (which I love so much). All the great software is open source (asides from games). ANything that can be done by paying for it.

Solid-opensource software windows-like super-computer:

KDE
AbiWord
KOffice
SunOffice(Never used it, heard good things about it, if forgot exact name as well)
Ximain Evolution (better than outlook!)

With all these, you can achieve the same (even more to be precice) as with microsuck crapdows. The hardware you still have to pay for, but I find that very acceptable.

Keep in mind that YaBB SE is still VERY young. Also, I'm betting that he didn't add the keys to speed up his forum and the machine gives me slow ping speeds to begin with.

Actually, as we continue to add features to it, it will more than likely get slower. Until a faster version of mySQL or PHP is released, it won't get too much faster, I assume.
