Preventing users from deleting messages

Is there a way to prevent users from deleting or editing their messages if they have already been replied to?

There is a tendency in my board that some users don't seem to like being accountable for what they said.  When they say something and someone else replies anything that he won't like he will go back and delete the message or edit it.  Then the other person is left arguing over nothing.

I would like users to be able to delete or edit their messages only if it is the last one in the thread.

There isn't anything exactly like you described, but they have made it halfway through what you want in the current version - You can't delete the first post in a thread if it contains replies anymore (you could in earlier versions).

I could probably hack this myself into the module that generates the thread page but only if I can tell whenever I reach the last message of the thread.  The idea is not displaying the links unless it is the last message and the request comes from the author or from a moderator.

Any ideas?

But you need to let moderators delete/edit and post in the thread.

Of course.  The idea is that the author can only edit/delete if the message is the last one in the topic.
