While I like that I can get the whole she-bang uploaded via PHP and my browser, I'd really rather be able to have the option of downloading the whole package as a Zip file, and following directions before putting it up on my site.

Why?  So I can sit, off line, and pour over the code without havign to upload, install, download and fiddle about until I'm sure I have all the files.

You CAN do that, download the safe mode package which is just a zip file of all the files that are packed in the non safe mode packages.

Ahhh.  Okay.

See, the 'info' on the download page says:

* The difference between the safe and the regular distribution.
The safe distribution contains an installer that will work with PHP safe mode enabled.
Apart from the size, the only difference is that you can only install YaBB SE in the directory you uploaded it to. Some systems have experienced trouble installing the safe mode version because of the limitations of safe mode. If you do experience said troubles, make a post on the Installer Help board or the Converter Help board and someone will assist you shortly.

So I read 'an installer' and naturally thought it was yet another web based installer. A little confusing.
