IP "scan"

I know of this feature on another board and this could definatley be used for larger boards. What it does it rather simple (maybe not in coding, however) it simply allows you to check a username and it will list all the IPs used by this username, or you can type in an IP and it will list any usernames used by this name. In effect, it makes it relatively easy to determine who's using "socks" and who the socks for that user are.

I totally diagree with your first statement !  Over 80% of the senior users of my forum are on Cable or higher.  The second statement i have no idea about...

however this is one of the best features in terms of security, something that YaBB SE lacks when it comes to trying to keep rogue members under control !  EzBoard even offers the feature !

So i totally agree with Anonymous Jedi and think it would be a great idea.  Perhaps not the idea behind logging what each user's IP is everytime they visit, but being able to paste in an IP addy and reference it to the usernames that way you can see if someone is playing funny buggers with multiple accounts.  As a mod it would be optional perhaps, thus if the "extra quiries" are such a great burden on the server then people can elect to enable or disable it.

Actually your mistaken Krip, a dynamic IP is a IP that changes every time you log on, ie a dial-up modem.

True but  DHCP tried to give the same IP back if its available so in most cases it stays the same for months....

Ok, I went ahead and started making this mod, and the only added queries were in the search, the board auto-logs the IP with each post. This mod shows you all users that have the same IP. I need to touch it up a bit, but I'm almost ready to release it.

i've seen this type of thing in action and while it's useless for dynamic IP users, it's incredibly useful for users like myself who have static IPs

as a side note, cable and most forms of dsl ~usually~ change the ip of a user about every 6 weeks if even that often...

Still, usually a dynamic IP only changes 1 or 2 of the last sets of numbers, so it's pretty uncommon to have the same IP as someone did, ever. That's why, once I figure out how, I'm going to put in wildcards so you can search for say the first 2 sets of numbers in the IP and wildcard the last 2.

or maybe make it so you can choose the last 2 or the last 1 for wildcard? :)

If I can get it to work, you will be able to select anything as a wildcard.
Such as:
xxx.0.0.1
127.xxx.xxx.1
127.0.xxx.1
127.xxx.0.1
127.0.0.xxx
127.0.xxx.xxx
xxx.0.0.1
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Etc

You would just split the string by the periods.  Easy to do if you already have a search function in place
