Yes, this would be an good addition to the Mod, rather than having to reconfigure each time you visit the board.

cheers........

Some improvements:

- now the full category title cell is clickable
- if you are a registered user, there are new posts in any of the cat boards and the cat is closed, the new gif will appear near the category title

look here:

Performing more tests i discovered that the javascript used is compatible only with IE 4+ and Opera, DaveS is working around this.

In the final version a cookie function will be implemented so the user collapse configuration will be saved.

How can you turn yabb into a javascript forum? That doesn't make sense. Anyway it's looking good alright Godai, pity about it not working with Netscape :-\

Personally, if I were coding that mod - I think I would go for straight PHP and do it server side.

The reason for that being that it wouldn't have to send any javascript to the client, and hidden categories would send less data.

While javascript is nice and fast, just not sending the data would result in lower bandwidth.

I cannot write it server side in php because the idea is to not cause reload collapsing and opening categories, the only way to do this is with javascript.

Then i don't mind to speed up the board, i only want an aid accessing large boards like my manga site: a yabb gold with 51 boards.

Well....it's not fascination with javascript, it's just that there weren't many enhancements made with javascript....and javascript can bring a lot of extra handy features.

If we keep javascript out, and do everything server-side, we will eventually make the usage of bandwidth huge because of the multiple reloads needed when constantly switching categories open / closed.
Also, downloading it once, and then hiding things with javascript is enormously faster.

When the javascript is distributed in a separate file, the browser will cache it, and it'll only have to be downloaded once. Additions to the board html itself are just the linking of the javascript, and 2 name tags in the TR's that contain the categories.

I see a lot more possibilities for javascript to fit in.....for example, the form-checking. When you enter a message, and you forgot to enter one of the fields....you can check that with javascript, rather than sending a request to the server and sending an error message back. It's faster, uses less bandwidth, and people will not lose their typed posts when using the back button (happens from time to time).

You mentioned cacheing of JS files.  Could you please confirm that? - I was under the impression that JS files were loaded each time.
