.PHP Files not working with folder set at 777

While the FAQ says to CHMOD the main directory to 777, the only way I can get the install and the board to work is:

1) CHMOD'ing the Directory to 755 aswell as the key files.

2) Adding #!/usr/local/bin/php ontop of every key file so that it knows where to look for the php on the server..

Is there anyway I can bypass all of this so I dont have to edit all the files...?

I just thought about something...

Are you sure your host even uses that feature of php?  Because if they are running in safe mode or something, you should have to do anything but CHMOD.

Just a thought.

Feature? No, as i said his host has setup PHP like Perl is setup, and ran the same way.

Its called with the shebang line and ran like a CGI script.

When I say feature, I mean aspect...

You know what I mean!

It's an ability php has; therefore, I just call it a feature!

Get me now?

Webhosts still can make the CGI binary act exactly like the Apache Modules.

Dunno why they would make PHP act like CGI though...  ??
