Help make my forum look nice?

Problem Description:
I just installed my forum, and started working on the html tonight... I hate to say this, but it looks like crap.  Could anyone help make it look better?

How do I change the icons on my forum that say 'help', 'home', etc?  I want to customize to make it look nicer.
