Email Issue After Converting

I converted to 1.5.0 from 1.1G.  Conversion went well with only a few minor bumps on the road.

I can't seem to figure out why emailing members is no longer working though.  All mail functions worked fine under 1.1G using smtp setting.

Now I get "Ran into problems sending Mail. Error: 501 Authentication failed - bad user or password."

Mailserver log entry from failed mailing (via 1.5.0):

Changing to sendmail gives the appearance of success (no reported errors), but mail is never sent nor received.

My webserver and mailserver are on different machines on my home network.

Webserver:  Apache 1.3.27-2
Webserver OS:  RedHat Linux 7.3
Mailserver:  Mercury/32 v.3.32
Mailserver OS:  Win9x

Am I missing a patch/fix or something?  Something I need to change on my mailserver perhaps (EHLO)??

Nope it's just you.

But look at this line:

Quote15:10:37.993: << 501 Authentication failed - bad user or password.<cr><lf>

I am guessing your password or you username was incorrect, that is why it couldn't send it.

No, I'm sure that's not it.  That's the first thing I checked.  I'm thinking there must be some subtle difference in the Perl and PHP implementation of SMTP.

I don't know enough about either to dig into the source and analyze it myself, but I'm convinced now that it has something to do with the differences in SMTP HELO and EHLO.

Note the successful login using 1.1G (HELO) and the failed login using 1.5.0 (EHLO).  It's probably one of those nifty security upgrades involving encryption...unfortunately one which I have no idea how to handle in my mailserver configuration..

???

I guess I'll just keep hammering at it on my own and post progress here for anyone else who may someday run into the same problem..

My suggestion: simply don't tell YaBB SE the password.  If you omit it, it won't do an auth login, and will work just like y1g did.

Mind you, this means your server is insecure, and could potentially be blacklisted for carrying spam.

Ah, that was it.  I suppose I just assumed that when I initially set up 1.1G that I had had to enter username and password for SMTP, but I see now that I didn't.

I did have a problem with email spammers and blacklists initially, but Mercury lets me allow relaying from my lan addresses while blocking it from externals..

I guess I just never put 2 and 2 together when I first installed 1.1G and then had to make allowances for it to be able to relay..

Thanks for the help.  It appears to be working fine now.
