SMTP 550 Errors and more!!!

So here's the deal. I'm running a W2K Server, apache/php/mysql installed. yabbse works great except I can't get it to send email notifications when a user first registers. I keep getting and error:


2: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [email protected]
(%root%\forum\Sources\Subs.php ln 323)


The reason why I haven't given up is because I had a particular setting for SMTP-server(under preferences) today that had it working for one user who registered.

Except, he didn't tell me it was working so I kept on trying other possible smtp-server names...smtp...localhost..smtp.scubafriend.com...scubafriend.com...(i have idea what else)

My question: is there a syntax I have to follow? Can anyone lend some insight. I've been trying to figure this out for 4 hours. Like I said, I haven't given up because I know it's possible. so yeah...if anyone needs anymore info, let me know.

Are you using 1.4.1 or 1.5.0?

Some srvers requie authentication - this is not built into 1.4.1.

You can use the SMTP mod or just wait for 1.5.0.

I'm using 1.4.1.

I don't see the need to use an SMTP mod because it worked once. Haha. Just that one time has been driving me crazy because I know it works. But then again, I could have been absolutely lucky that it went through....

This error:

Unable to relay for [email protected]

Means "You didn't give me a password."

Perhaps they changed it?

Yeah, many people has already said password. But there wasn't one from the beginning. there is no password set for the smtp...the first time that it did work, there was no password involved either. i really think it's a syntatical thing...how the STMP-server field is supposed to be filled in...

I might have your answer. I'm also running Win2k server but IIS not Apache (Shouldn't matter here). I found the php.ini file the system was using in the c:\winnt directory. Edit this file and the only change to make is put a valid smtp server name there (Doesn't matter which one I use mail.ntelos.net my ISP's). Then in the yabbse Forum Preferences and Settings null out the location of sendmail program and smtp-server text boxes. There seams to be a bug in the yabbse program where it doesn't use this data. Try again.

It's not a bug.  It's just that it wasn't removed yet.

To change the SMTP settings, please use the boxes in Installed 'Mods' and Settings.
