Yeah, I actually think that would be most useful for the people who are concious of their spelling, and generally those people are usually good spellers but find themselves wondering occasionally. Like myself, for instance. I'd find Greg's method extremely handy.

The people it wouldn't help are the people who know they can't spell and don't care all that much. (Not claiming this is a bad thing necessarily, just referring to a certain category of spellers.)

These folks would probably find it much more useful if the board automatically checked the spelling of the whole post and offered them suggestions to correct each misspelled word, the way a word processor would.

Yes it would be easy, but when you look at the words we use when typing, the bulk of the words are in the 10,000 words that we use on a day-to-day basis.

90% (guess) of the time they're less than 6 letters. It's when you need to check that it would really come in handy. I know I would use it :)

I'm with Greg and irbrian on this one! I basically trust my spelling, but frequently look up/check the odd word I'm not quite sure about. I'd actually be *more* likely to use Greg's idea than a full-blown spell checker. 8)

Exactly, same here, but my point is that other people (there are a couple on one of the boards I run) really need something a little more detailed. And I do mean really.

Does any other forum software have a spell checker built in?

I have done quite a bit of research looking into Spelling and PHP.  There are a couple really good programs out there.. but they all cost a fair bit of cash.  There are only really two that are free that I have seen so far.

1) The Pspell option in PHP which is unavalibly in the Win32 version.

2) Using the MSOffice spell checker.  This requires that you have Office installed.  Most people do have office installed now a day, but keep in mind that this option is very much a work around and not a realistic solution... only a band-aid on the problem.

bumpity bumpity bump bump

Even one that would be 'easy' to do is better then none at all... I think this would be a major mod used on many boards if it was done.

Here is an Idea for a Spell Checker. You can suggest the members download this small program as a client side checker.
It is at http://www.iespell.com
You just right click and select check spelling in any form box.
I really works well and the price is right.  ;)

"ieSpell is not spyware or adware. Its free for personal and not-for-profit use."

Its free, whats wrong about telling people about free software?
