YaBB SE 2 hasn't been worked on for a year, so you can't say that it hasn't been released after a year of work. The entire YaBB SE has barely been around for a year, if that...

YaBB SE 1.0.0 came out in December 2001, or late November 2001 if I'm not mistaken.

Right, so SE has been out for like 10 months...to release two major versions in a year would be quite something. But that is what perplexes me. I mean sheesh, everyone wants SE2 completed NOW :)

Not me, Jeff! What we've got works and I just don't get this whole 'it must be dead unless there's a major upgrade a year' thing. So upgrades and new versions are nice, but let's not forget that what we have still does what it was built to do!

Just install Yapp.  I'd call that thing a major upgrade of Yabb.  I love the easy block management, menu management, and how you can easily install your own pages as board links, etc., etc..  I think it's a major improvement of Yabb SE.

How is it a major improvment if it is something totally different.  ???  You could call it a good add on or a good use of YaBBSE.

For those that hadn't noticed my absence over the past month or so, I can tell you I'm back and I'm going to speed up the coding a bit.

However bear in mind that we're taking a quickly coded port from an inflexible code base and making something with database abstraction, a template system, better security and more features.

Comparing version 2 to version 1 is like comparing Java to PHP.

I wouldn't be suprised if version 2 could withstand a nuclear bomb blast. :D

Version 2 is really more of a version 3 because of the leap we're making - we'll be supporting multiple database types and completely abstracting the HTML. After 2 version 3 will be easy to code as the structure will be there. I see version 3 focusing on features and documentation.

This is probably kind of a stupid question, but will the conversion be easy?  I ask this before I don't want to upgrade to 1.4.1, just because of all the hacks I've made.  Will there be a converter for 1.4.0 as well?  Also, how easy do you think it will be to hack?  The SSI functionality is important to me because that's about 95% of my main website page.

I was too lazy to read through every post but I have a few questions about improvements that we will see in 2.0.

1.) Will we see a better admin tool for editing templates?  I really like the one phpbb has.  You can control everything from a control center and it seems every part of the template has a separate control to really customize the look of your boards.  Yabbse is very simplistic and you don't have a lot of control with the look and feel.

2.)  Will we see a better IM system?  i.e. pop-up window for new messages?

3.) This is soooooo important, will we see a search engine that works properly?

4.) Would love to see the capability to have categories within categories.

5.) Would love to see multiple private groups.

This is no new feature, there is a mod for it including PopUp and sound "You've got a new message" in the german mods area.

It works, but it only works as good as the user who uses it ::)

Quote5.) Would love to see multiple private groups.
Jep, will be in SE 2.

Well, why is it that every other board I use I can type in a username and hit search and it will display any posts by that user.  I try that in yabbse I get nothing?

There are private groups, this is so simple to do. You  just create  a group and only give certain members access to it. I  have done this and that private board is not viewable by members who have not been permitted access. If this is not what you were referring to then, then i am sorry that i could not be of any more help.

Sheesh, what more do you want from SE2, you want it to cook your food and clean your room for you? ::)

I say just make it simple and easy to use and let any additional features that aren't necessities be added through mods. :P
