I would like to see a traceroute mod above or below the ip address link that admins see. Would be nice to trace problem users.

Is it really that hard to copy someone's IP and then type tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx into a command prompt or shell (depending on your OS)?

Oh, and what's the point anyway. If you have problem users, all you really need to know is the IP, and maybe the ISP name (already built in)

Would it be bad if only admins had access?

maybe for the admins, or if the admins are the only people able to see them, but they are the most frequent visitors... many variables to consider, and doing a trace on each poster is just a crazy thing to do, unless you do it once when they register, or switch ips and store the info in their profile... then it might be easier on the load.

I'm talking about: similar to the ability to see and do a lookup on the ip address the ability to see the IP and then do a traceroute if their having problems or are troublemakers.

I'll repeat my question - Why is a traceroute necessary?

It's not....forget it......thought it would be a nice feature when your having a problem with a banned user that's smart enough to use a public proxy and wreak havvoc on your forum. I'll just keep using my trusty tracert.exe

Tracing a route won't helpyou identify someone if they are using a proxy, unless the proxy gives the IP of the machine the request originated from (which "anonymizers" like Surfola etc. don't) and even then, traceroute is of no particular value.

that is true and also banning a whole proxy could ruin a whole group of people visiting your forum

RACE FOR SPENT!

I have no idea what its good for but here it is:

In the Display.php file search for:
http://www.nic.com/cgi-bin/whois.cgi?query=$mip This is the line that puts the IP address link in to the nic.com whois.  After the closing </a> tag insert this code:
<a href=\"http://www.washington.edu/networking/tools/traceroute?search_address=$mip\" target=\"_blank\">traceroute</a>  it will add a trace route link with the label "traceroute".  clicking on it will perform a traceroute from the University of Washinton to what ever the IP address is of the user.  I might suggest that you find an alternate suplier of the traceroute script.  But thats how the mod would work.  Have fun with it... modify it... do what ever... just don't ask me how it works or if I'll fix it.

You can find a huge list of traceroute servers and I think source code to have your own here: http://www.traceroute.org/

no problem... I find it funny sometimes when people refuse to help just because they think your idea is useless.  I don't have an opinion on the usefullness of this idea but I enjoy solving problems.  Good luck with it.

Thanks again...I'm trying to find a good simple php traceroute script now. I have one up and running but can't seem to get it to call correctly from the link.
http://community.clnk.com/network/index.php
It works great here but I'd like the same thing with the popup and all from the link you created. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't refuse to help, I refuse to waste my time on something that would be nothing more than a toy. If he'd given a good reason, I'd have been happy to write a traceroute script. (Although it would probably be a mighty pain in the arse, considering I haven't been able to find any ICMP related functions in the PHP help, and so I'd have to write it using sockets)
