IRC Chat ?

We have a new mod in testing for IRC chat (using java applet) in yabb gold.

Is there anyway to "convert" that mod or create a similar one for SE ?

I would be interested in this IRC chat but only if there were some way to make sure that people couldn't use other members' usernames. This is probably a long-shot huh? Unless everyone registers on the IRC server. iamdamnsam, do you have the chat hosted on your server or another? Thanks.

The IRC room is a dalnet room, so no I do not host it.  On mine, if you click the chat link, your username is attached to a string that the chat.cgi puts in as your nick.

JPilot - Only problem with that is it costs money.

eIRC - you can only use it on your own server UNLESS you pay for a certificate...

ConferenceRoom - only connects to servers running the ConferenceRoom IRC daemon .

CGI scripts - soak up the server's bandwidth, the admin may not be pleased with you to say the least...

I've seen others as well but they either don't work or need certificates to bypass the Java sandbox security.

JPilot - Only problem with that is it costs money.

... not to spark any illegal activity, but it can be used without buying it.  They have Unregistered trials also.

Yes, but in the free trial it has an annoying message everytime a client types a message. If you can put up with that, fine - use it.

Oh and there's nothing stopping you from using Jpilot if you want to pay for it

I'm using eirc ..we have our own irc server network (now under test and being used exclusively for yabb  sp 1.1 forums)

Question is ..can it be modded into SE so it picks up user info when they log onto chat and also allows the forum owner to set default channel and other settings in the admin panel ...similar to the sp mod...

I was looking to upgrade my forum to SE but would like the same kind of chat feature.

I doubt it, but is there a way to list the users in a channel on the message board?  So that people that are browsing the message board can see who is in chat and possibly join in.  I don't think it's been done though...

having who is in the chat room is possible with an eggdrop.  Also, I have found scripts on the net that will run through mIRC and spit out tons of channel info into a text file that can be uploaded to a server periodically (like every 5 mins).  Once the info is on the server it is easy to get it on your site.  Bad part is if you lose your connection, that file on the server never updates.  I have toyed with doing this with 4 or 5 members of my site, so there would always be someone with mIRC connected, but it was too much hassle.
