Maybe this should be more of a request for SE2, but it would be nice to have a mod that will take all posts over a certain age, and move them into a locked, read-only section on the board. Deleting old posts isn't cool, because then they are lost ... but if they are moved to an archive section, you can still go back to look at them later without having to waste MySQL requests to load them into the forum index. :)

I was thinking of making an Archive mod not too long ago, but it'd be something different. You can  "Archive" a thread at which time it becomes locked and is "special" in the way it can't be deleted by delete thread, or topics older than xx days delete either. After archiveing it you could leave it where it is, or move it to a archive board. I think I will do this after all.

I've thought of doing this too. The reason is to free up space in the db and decrease loading time by getting rid of older posts. Two ways  of doing it. One, make older posts into static html pages. They would look the same as board pages just without reply, quote, etc. buttons. Two, create another db just for archived posts.

Personally, I'm leaning toward option One, any reason I shouldn't be?

groundup, the point is of an archive is for old messages to be stored, deleting it would defeat the purpose.... if you really needed the space you could de-archive it though and then delete it.

@Dude: I wasn't even really thinking of freeing up space in the dbase ... more cutting dbase usage by moving old posts to a different area of the dbase ... speeds up the recent posts, because the queries won't have to sort through old garbage, and keeps people from pulling old posts out of no where, helps keep the board fresh. :)

The idea of static html pages would be cool, except that if you changed your site layout, you'd have to change all of those static pages ... which is exactly what I would not want to do, and I doubt others would either.

I think either the option of a second database, or just a new table on the existing dbase would be the way to go. :)

good point ShujiYomo. I've got archived posts from my old wwwboard which I've never changed. ;) They're clearly marked as archives tho. But I know some folks would want to change them.

The main thing would be to move them out of the main messages table to help decrease load time. Maybe I'll do it both ways. :)

Static pages could work.  You make a static page of all the messages but not the headers and stuff.  then if you change colors it would be wrong but when viewing it the static pae would be inaserted into the current template.

You know this may be wierd, but I've been playing with a yabb gold board. Basically tearing the guts out so all it will do is display messages. Probably will wind up with just Boardindex.pl, Messageindex.pl and Display.pl. Well Yabb.pl too...... ;) The advantages would be you could use the same template so if you change your site you only have to make one template. The boards would be the same. And by reversing the conversion.php file it would be fairly easy. At least that's what I think now ;D

I would like to hear one of the developers thoughts on this topic.  Would be cool if some form of this was implemented in to YSE2.
