that's very cool! I'm waiting patiently for the public release... I'd gladly become a Charter Member if I had the money

have fun with your new forum software :D

the the PHPSESSID, I don't know how to fix it other than removing it completely, but I don't know how good this is, probably not very

Do guests need a Session?  What would happen if you just didn't start a session for guests?

Well, I didn't have a path after the script, because I renamed it to "content" with no description.

@ini_set('session.use_trans_sid', 0);
Didn't get rid of it for me.  I even went into php.ini and set that option globally, and I still had the session ID. I renamed the session from "PHPSESSID" to "p", but google still didn't like it.

I watched google for over a month, and the existing pages stayed, but it never indexed a single page using the new format.  But, since I switched to SMF, it's kinda late to play with the mod settings now  :P

I installed smf last night and changed my $scripturl to content, so my url's look like: http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,2966 and google was crawling within a few hours.  I just checked "Who's Online", which shoes IP addresses for each guest, and I have 5 different google IP's viewing 5 different topics right now.

exactly how and where did you change your $scripturl to what you wanted it to say?

you could do this

<edit file>
index.php
</edit file>

<search for>
if (function_exists('session_start'))
</search for>

<replace>
if (function_exists('session_start') && $username != 'Guest')
</replace>

but first I'd want to know if the session is actually useful when used with a Guest :P

then this is good :D

This will be a great mod if I can get ot to work on my "managed" server!

WARNING: LONG MESSAGE!
I installed using boardmod, got a few errors at first (mainly to do with line spacings and tabs not being found - on steps 4, 12, 34, 36), but correction of the mod file soon sorted that out.

I then uploaded the files to the server and with the mod turned on, then I could not link from the index.php to any of the boards.

I then tried to see if the "lookback" thing was working on the Apache by trying what was suggested before, by putting a "test" after the URL of my boards:
http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/test but all I got was a 404 - file not found.

I then rang up my ISP (OneAndOne) to ask what version on Apache is installed on my managed server, and they assured me it was version 1.3.3
I can log into the server in a shell using SSH, but I'm not root, and I'm not sure what command I can put in to discover for myself what vesrion of Apache I'm running. From what I can gather it's SuSE that's running on it.

ANYHOW - I believed that the "AcceptPathInfo On" is like a default in 1.3.3 and is not needed - but clearly becasue of my "test", it's not the case of my server's installation. SO - I thought that perhaps they had got the version number wrong, so I added "AcceptPathInfo On" to the .htaccess file (because you have to stop and restart Apache to read the httpd.conf I believe - and becasue I am not root I can't). As soon as I tried that it came up with "internal Server Error" on the whole website. I removed it, so I suppose I really do have v1.3.3 after all.

I've looked at the apache.org website, and I've googled areound for ages, but I don't know what command or modification to do to the httpd.conf file (or other file) for the "lookback" feature to be re-enabled.

And alas, without it, I won't be able to get this wonderful mod to work.

Any ideas anyone?

You can't do that.  It has to go in httpd.conf

Thanks Anguz & dschwab9 - My ISP (oneandone) are not great when it comes to support, they only support until 8pm, and when support is available it seems let me say a little lacking at times (but perhaps I've just been unlucky)

Dschwab9: (I added it to the .htaccess file because you can do that as a temporary thing - it's not ideal (just to see if indeed I was runnng on Apache 1.3.3 or 2.0. I couldn't put it into httpd.conf because if I did I would have to stop and restart Apache - and I don't have the privelages on the "managed" server to do it) :'(

upload a php file to your host with this single line

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

and load it in your browser, there you can check what Apache version you have (http://mx.php.net/phpinfo)

if it's 2, ask your ISP to enable pathinfo for you
