New topic -- message field missing!

My SE install went flawlessly [Mac OS X] but now it seems I've turned something on or off that screws up the New Topic window.
 
I can see Subject and Message Icon field as well as the Notify and Disable Smilies blue cell at the bottom [post, review, reset are all there too].
 
But the Message area itself is gone. Any suggestions on where to start looking? TIA

Check whether you did disable the YABBC tags (in the admin menu). If so then the message area shoud come back, as soon as check "Show YaBBC Buttons on Posting and IM send Pages?". You find this checkbox in the admin menu, forum preferences and settings.

That fixed it, as you said. What exactly is the point of this setting? Does this mean I can't have a message system without all the smilies and YABBC tags?

I honestly believed by unchecking that option that I would be disabling that feature, not removing the ability to post messages.

It's a bug in 1.0, it's been fixed in 1.1 and also for 1.3

Thanks, Andrea and Jeff. The 1.1 fixed this problem.

Do you have plans to make smilies optional in the message composition box? I know some people like them but others find them a little cheesy and like the words to speak for themselves.

Another question – I hope it's not stupid: When you release an update is it possible to apply the update to an existing site? Is this what convert.php does? [I didn't try running it because I thought it might convert a pre-PHP/mySQL version.]

Congratulations on a good-looking system! I really like the easy access to the CSS/template -- much easier than phpBB.
