Mod to 'TTT' without posting?

You know how occasionally people will type in 'TTT' to get a topic to the top of the topic list? Well, how hard would it be to make a mod, called 'Top' or something, that comes with a button, and makes the topic go to the top of the list as if it were replied to, but without the actual reply?

uh... if you want a top & down button, it's already available
you just need to activate it in the Installed Mods Settings page

I know that. :P I just used the name top for no better reason. Unless that those buttons physically move the post to the top of the board index..

Hrm :-\ Wonder how I could explain it better

I understand what you're saying. You're asking for a way to 'bump' a post to the top of the cat index without actually putting a post called 'bump' or something in the thread, BUT not listing it as a new post. Essentially like a temporary stickie until a newer post comes along. Right?

Right ;D

I hate it too, it's needless spam, and annoying to have to see TTT in a lot of posts. So, as my original question asked, how hard would this be to make? ;D Or, would somebody be willing to undergo it, since I'm still learning PHP and whatnot? :-X

In theory, this would be very simple.  Just need to make a button in Display.php that, when clicked, updates the PosterTime of the last message in the messages table to the current time.

Of course, you give people the ability to do this with a click of a button, and you're going to get a whole lot more people doing it.  There's a potential that your board could become a complete mess with people moving posts to the top all the time.

It'd be no different than if they were to reply with a TTT to every post ;)

yes, it would be different... cause if they "TTT" then it's obvious they did so... if they just click "bump", there's no evidence of who did it, so it's much easier to bump the topic all the time

I know at least 30 members in my forum that post stupid threads all the time and get no replies, I know for sure they'll keep using that button for no reason just to keep their silly thread at the top... if they had to reply to it every time, after a couple they'd stop cause it looks bad and it's obvious no-one cares

I don't know... if you're gonna do something like this, limit the button to mods or gmods and admins, at least you already trust their judgement to manage the forums

Or you could limit 'bumps' per day/week/month or whatever timeframe you're looking at. Perhaps user X is allowed only 2 'bumps' per month. Dunno. If I were to do this, I'd make it restricted to top level users (admin/glob mod/mod) like Anguz said.

Heh, if you restrict it to admins or mods, then the normal members would just reply with a TTT to do the same thing  ::)

While there's certainly a chance of that happening, I trust my members, none of them are stupid enough to just keep hitting that button. And if they did, 99% of the time it would be fairly obvious to me who it was that did it.

*shrugs* If worse comes to worse, would there be some way of making it so that the person who clicks 'bump' would leave their name somewhere that only an admin could see it? :P *scratch*

i can see something like this get abused easily
unless a permission system is used, as Method says, but that'll make the mod more complicated
why dont u just disallow your forum users from bumping a topic?

Nono, the point is, that I want to allow them to bump topics :P, just wish that it could happen without the spammy messages of 'bump' or 'TTT' or anything.

Would it help if I say that I don't care about abuse? ;) I trust my members enough so that they won't abuse it.
