I am still running 151 and everything was fine till today people started getting the following messages when trying to reply to a post.

Ran into problems sending Mail. Error: 500 failed authentication

I have not changed anything so I am very curious as to what is causing this and how to resolve it. Any help would be appriciated. I am using the latest version of mysql and php running on a windows 2000 advanced server

I'm no expert, and I could be way off, but in Forum and Preferences there are two check boxes that you can check if you get errors on MS IIS servers. (I'm assuming you're using IIS) If not, totally disregard this post and my lack of knowledge.  :P

Those boxes don't do anything and have been removed.  (in the next version...)

Check your SMTP settings - password and username.  Make sure they are correct.

"Ran into problems sending Mail. Error: 500 failed authentication"

I don't know what to say.. it's saying, essentially:
- A problem occurred while trying to send an email.
- The server sent the message "500 failed authentication" back.

The error message means that the SMTP server did not like your username and password combination.  You can try omiting your password, as it that will make it try a different method.

If it doesn't work, contact your host.  Tell them the SMTP server is giving back that message even with the correct username and password.

I noticed in my settings.php it gives a path to sendmail
mailprog = "/usr/sbin/sendmail";
$smtp_server = "127.0.0.1";
$webnaster_email = "[email protected]";
$mailtype = 1;

Could you tell me if this is correct? The 127.0.0.1 is my local machine

No, I'm talking about the Settings in the 'Mods' Settings page.  Those (in Settings.php) are no longer used.
