Email IM's

I have a couple of problems with IM's:

1) many members that receive a notification when they get an IM, instead of going to the forum to reply, they just hit the reply button in their email and the answer is obviously directed to me, the webmaster...

2) many members keep lots of IMs in their inboxes and outboxes and that is using a lot of MBs...

I thought that it'd be nice to make a little modification to the IM system which I'll try to explain

when sending an IM to someone, instead of saving it in the DB, the message is sent as an email, there could be an option where the guy sending it receives a copy of it in his email too...

the email with the IM would have a small text mentioning that "the following text was sent from forum X by member X:" and then the message sent and at the bottom say "you can send a reply at the following page: url"... or something like that

the url would open a form in the forum where the person can reply with another email... the email address would not be displayed, since it's done via de forum and addressed to the member, not the email account, privacy is safe

there could be an option where instead of receaving an email for each IM, they could be grouped into a single email once, twice or whatever, a day... each message with it's own url to reply

anyone think it'd be good to have this in your forum?

I changed that in my forum. It is not exactly what you are looking for, but it is the easiest way:

Change the code in your english.lng

$txt[561] = "New $mbname-Message: (SUBJECT)";
$txt[562] = "(DATE) SENDER has sent you the following Instant Message:\n\n->*<-\n\nMESSAGE\n\n->*<-";

to what you like. I have something like this: "Hi, you have a new Instant Message. Go to the forum to read it"

It's not the best, but at least the users don't reply to the email notification.

Check out the AdvIM mod. This mod will do exactly what you're asking about. You can also choose whether or not you want it to send you an email everytime you get a new message.

You're welcome... That mod will also allow you to specify how many messages users can keep in their inbox and/or outbox...
