Hello y'all,
Is there anyone that realizes the importance of being able to archive old post? This is a SERIOUS shortcoming in YaBB !!!  When I downloaded YaBB, I was sure it had this ability somewhere. When I discovered it didn't, I just knew there was a mod for it, but there's not!   :o

It's amazing to see all the efforts to develop more smilies and tricks when such a crippling aspect of the program goes unnoticed. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just can't believe no one is concerned with such a disastrous flaw in this fabulous script.

Why archive? Well, without it you either throw away your information or simply let it pile up until it crashes the server. If you don't delete the old post your dial-up access members start complaining about slow pages, then your server tech starts fussing about the system resources being used and there you are, wishing you had not started using YaBB at all.

It's also discouraging when a new user ask a question that has been answered several times and the members ignore him or get irritated and say, "That's already been covered!" The poor guy is then rejected and just goes elsewhere for the info and it's good bye to that new member.

I'm not a programmer or I'd do this mod myself, but I will help in any way possible to get this horrible problem corrected. I've been told that "it might be included with SE2" but I know that I can't wait around on a maybe.

If anyone can help please contact me, quote me a price... whatever. YaBB is too close to perfect to allow this simple feature to be ignored!

Let's fix it!!      ;D

Thanks for replying!

We need to be able to archive or save old posts in a separate file from the active boards.

A script(s) that would give the Admin an option to save old posts instead of deleting them.

Ideally... it would take the old post and write them to an HTML file in a WWW/archives or (public) folder where it can be saved and viewed. Also these "real" pages can be spidered by the search engines (extremely important).

The need to do this is to prevent the active boards from getting gigantic with a million post in 100,000 topics or worse. It will happen.  :'(

The current solution is to delete them but that is disastrous for anyone attempting to use YaBB as an informational resource. I have guys that tell others how to fix all sorts of motorcycle problems and we must keep deleting them to keep our resource usage in check.

I have to agree with 2whellin on this one.  I was kind of surprised that all the neat little tricks for mods kept coming up, but not this one.  I didn't think about it too much as I love YaBB SE, but this would be an awesome mod for those boards who are growing quickly.

This is the one thing I have been looking for :(I thought I was over looking it or some thing. The ladies on my board put posts out like mad,and I know at some point I will be deleting posts just to keep the boards running quickly enough for them.Is this some thing that may get added in an upgrade or mod?

IF you do save them to a HTML/TEXT version, it would cause more load than it does now.  Also, what would be the point if you can just move them to an archive board or dump the schema?  Maybe to just move the posts to a seperate table?  that would be the easiest to do (not that I am going to).

No. They're not talking about archiving everything every time something changes, just whenever they feel it's time to move something out of the main stream and leave it static.

QuoteAlso, what would be the point if you can just move them to an archive board or dump the schema?
So you don't have to dynamically pull data that is and will remain static.

Michael is on track. The whole idea is to reduce the amount of data moved around in the program without deleting and also give the Webmaster static pages that can be spidered and indexed into the search engines. These pages are "read only" for users once they're archived, nobody can post to the threads anymore. It's just to save the stuff and keep it available.

As it is, one must either keep everything active, or throw it away a little at a time whenever we clean our YaBB house.

Anybody have an ETA on SE2 ?? Beta?

Anybody have an idea of the complexity of doing this "archive' thing?? The more I look at it, the more complicated it looks but I'm tellin' ya, YaBB has to have this.

Dang I wish I wuz nerdier! I'd squirt this mod right out!  ;D

Today, ...er yesterday now, was such a bomb I'm obviously still uptight!!

Please accept my apology, Daniel.    :'(

I's frustrating that I can't do this myself and don't have more time to study.

I see that you ride, I certainly don't want to diss a bro!   ;D

The same here... Sometimes it's a great pity.
