Those are cool but its hard to see when there are new replies or topics in them because you have to go to one of the boards before you see them. You can see new replies/topics from the board index.

The reason new posts aren't signified on the board index, is because it would cause irritating cascade problems.  As boards can be nested to infinite levels, it would place an excessive load on the server to calculate when new messages were present.
