I'm not sure what the big problem with having JS in the board is. Fact is, PHP is good for serverside stuff and JS is good for clientside stuff. If you can find a happy marriage between the 2 of them you will have a killer lookin' board which is extremely efficient (not many reloads).

With our development project at work we mix: Flash, Javascript, and pull everything together with Cold Fusion.

JS can add some amazing functionality to websites. So can flash, especially with the new MX release... hope the development team isn't completely biased against introducing new concepts into the board. The possibilities are endless.

BTW, very interested in this MOD. Not sure if it's been released or not but please post link in this thread if possible.
