Jabber support?

Hi guys,

Is there any chance in getting Jabber support added to this product?  

I see support for all the commercial/proprietary messaging systems, but wouldn't it be better to support an open system like Jabber?

I have no problem doing so, but I was unable to find anything that was the equivalent of "online" icons or anything.

It sounds more like Jabber is a protocol that can be used to develop your own IMing systems rather than a new instant messaging network.

It's both...  an open protocol, and there are opensourced servers and clients, as well as commercial servers and clients.  Think of it as similar to email, but for IM.  Jabber.org is the home of the most complete (unix based) server.

You can see a list of (some of the) public servers running on the web at http://www.jabberview.com - also http://www.jabbercentral.com has a fairly complete list of jabber clients.

It may not be as simple as adding a link to the ICQ webpager is - ie some server side scripting might be needed, but we would really appreciate it if you would take the time to let us know what you need.  I am happy to help out as much as I can, or to shanghai someone into helping :-)  But this is what open sourced projects are all about hey?

Let me know what you need.  All the specs are on the jabber.org site, and there are guys that are good at scripting hanging out on the JDEV list http://mailman.jabber.org/listinfo/jdev/

Being a completely open protocol really means Jabber has some great possibilities for interacting with YaBB that probably haven't been thought of yet.  There is nothing (except for time and energy :-) to stop you guys (say) running a Jabber server jabber.yab.info with scripts to ping off headline format instant messages to people when new posts arrive etc, or allow people to post messages via Jabber clients etc etc.

Oh, the Jabber logo is - by tradition - a yellow lightbulb.  I can make one up for you if you need one...  a turned off lightbulb can work for offline users.

Yep groundup - I agree that the Jabber project could use a nicely configured copy of YaBB.  Unfortunately JabberStudio.org - the development/community work area is in a state of disrepair at the moment    I would love to see some forums there actually but I'm no PHP expert.  Any volunteers?    I'm sure I can put you in touch with someone you can get you shell access!

I'm willing to do it - I'd love to help out the project.  I'm not sure if I have the time to analyze the jabber integration idea yet - but i definitely want to work on it.

If you're amenable to it, I can set up a board for you to get the Jabber community working, and I'll work on trying to get some Jabber integration working.

Thanks for the offer Joseph!  I've fired off an email to one of the admins of JabberStudio.org to see if they think it's a good idea.  I'm not exactly sure what they have planned for the site, but I'll keep you posted.

It would be way-cool to see the new reply notifications popping up as a Jabber message rather than an email.  It shouldn't be that hard to do...
