Time displays incorrectly since upgrade

Since I upgraded from 1.0.0 to 1.3.0 (plus the 1.3.0 upgrade bug fix(es)) the time no longer displays correctly.

In 1.0.0, it used to say something to the effect of:
"Hey, admin, you have 0 messages. April 23rd, 2002, 10:39:03 pm"

But now it simply comes up with the letters you use to display the specific time variables in the date() function, like:
   "Hey, admin, you have 0 messages. F jS, Y, h:i:s a"

What's the problem here, and a simple fix would be nice thanks.
