staying logged in?

Help!  I can't stay logged in with Netscape 6.2 or MSIE 6.0 on either of the two machines available to me.  Opera will work just fine though.  I've changed cookie names, deleted cookies, changed MSIE internet options to everything from accept all cookies to accept session cookies and nothing seemed to help.  Deleted YaBB SE and removed all files from my database and started all over with a new install.  Removed SSI.php and Subs.php and installed another version per one of the threads here.  Nothing seems to help.  

Does this have anything to do with chmod?  I can't seem to change permissions on a lot of the files, they are protected somehow.  Help!  If I can't figure this one out pretty quickly I'm going to have to install another board and I really like YaBb.

This seems to be a recurring problem... if you search the forums (search button's at the top), you will find a lot of posts about this.

To give you the brief story:
we have tried hosts, operating systems, different browsers, numerous re-installs and we don't seem much closer to finding a solution.

Future versions of YaBB will use sessions to avoid this problem
