Adding fields to the Profile Section

I have spent days trying to add additional fields to the profile section, I have gotten it to show in both the profile and the modify sections.

I understand the english.lng file and how that works, the prob I am having is getting it to write the new data to the members table in the database...

Has anyone added fields to there profile section, and how did you do it??
