Safe Mode Install 1.1.0

I just nee a little guidance here.
I downloaded 1.1.0 safe mode and uploaded all files and directories to my server. I see now that the installer is the wrong one (who stuffed that one up?).
I read on this board that you need to intall 1.0 and then upgrade to 1.1.0 and convert files.

Now my question are;
1. Do I have to remove all of the 1.1.0 files from the server before doing the 1.0.0 install, or do I just add a few 1.0 files.
2. What is the difference between convert and upgrade? Aren't they pretty much the same thing?
3. re Directories - 1.1.0 has several directories "Help", "Source", "Packages", "Images" . Do all of these need to be uploaded and do all of them have to be chmod to 777?

Thanks for the help.

I did :)

Don't go through all that hassle.  Just grab the installer file from the 1.0.0 safe mode package and you should be just fine.

People are suggesting chmod of 777, the main folder does need to be that.  Also, when done chmod Settings.php and template.html/php 666.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply, and the honesty.

At the risk of getting blasted, in my frustration, I downloaded PHPBB2 RC-3 and it installed without a hitch (other than a database not connecting - fixed in 5 minutes).

I have customized this to match the feel of my site. However I am still open minded about which is the better board. So I will be watching both community boards to get a feel for which performs better (page load speed and bandwidth usage). I want to make a final decision befoe there are too many entries on the board.

I was originally using Bravenet's forums, but couldn't tolerate the increasing advertising. I'd love to be able to transfer the messages across but I fear that is a lost cause.
