well pretty much self-explanatory.

a fornt end where you have all current uptodate information on the forum, with a login possibility would be nothing less than great..........

so you want a login with what else?  ssi.php will do almost anything now adays

An example can be found here, but if you are going at it perhaps try and modify the design to be more box-like with an option to enable boxes with different kind of information in the administration section.

And create some integration of a newssystem like coranto (former newspro now with mysql) and whoops you have a portalsystem.

Might demand a bit work though right ???
