What IS the Topic Summary Post function?

Can anyone answer that question for me please.
In my settings I can set the summary posts but WHERE do you find this option in the board (where do visitors find it) and what does it actually do ? ::)

When you reply to a post, a topic summary is under the text box.  This is handy for very large threads like the old PIC thread on yabb.xnull.

So you can set the number of posts to display.
