"E-mail Members" always times out?

Problem Description:
Every time I try to send out a global e-mail to all my forum members, it acts as if it's sending for about 3 minutes, then my browser gives me a "This page cannot be displayed." error. I'm assuming that something is timing out? I have over 2000 members and I thought maybe it was just too much? Is there some way to get around this?

I'm using the sendmail option... should I select SMTP?

May be someone can give us a solution (please do not refer to SMF). May be code to split mails into smaller parts....
