I have been editing my php files in notepad.  Today the program began "crunching" the code when I saved the file. Causing it to result in errors if I uploaded it.

Same THING with wordpad. Can anyone reccomend an editor that I can download to use? Hopefully a FREE one?  ;D

I like ConText.... it's only problem is that it adds a carriage return to the end of files :/.

Ooh favourite text editors, this thread could go on for days! ;)

http://www.crimsoneditor.com/ is my favourite. It's a small download, syntax highlighting, tabbed display for multiple files, and handles CRLF/LF transparently (it saves in the format [Unix/Windows] you opened the file in)

PS it's free :)

The ultimate PHP editor: Zend Personal Studio!

This baby does everything, is free for personal use, and has an included debugger that NO other product I've yet tried even begins to match. Best of all its made by the same company that develops the Zend Engine, the heart and soul of PHP.

Personally, I use TextPad for almost all scripting, both for PHP and other languages.

If you don't want to go to the hassle of having to download files, edit them, then upload them again, there's a great site called net2ftp.com which has a built-in file editor. It's great. You can edit the files directly (although I still haven't figured out how to insert "tabs" without just inserting a ton of spaces) and then save them right on the server.

You know, I recently had to use that for something (couldn't do any installations, but had to work on some PHP...) and it's not half bad.  It's not designed for big PHP projects, but it is pretty good.

I use PHPEdit. It's still in development and has a couple of habits that can become annoying (like adding "]" every time you type "["), but it's pretty good. Its main problem is that the message boxes are in French. But that only covers saving, and it's easy to figure out what's what.

Well, most of my development is in Perl, so I don't know of any PHP editors, but Metapad is a good text editor to replace notepad...

PHP Expert Editor
the best thing about this editor that it can debug your code and run it if you have php engien installed in your PC ... you don't need Apech or anything beside PhpEE and php engien to run your script ..

but .. it's a shareware :'( and a very expensive one ..
