install problem | 1.5.2 | mySQL newbie

I'm trying to move from one sort of BBS system (HyperNews) to YABSSE, bor awhole host of reasons. I'm trying to do the install on my server, running RH Gnu/Linux 7.3, Apache 2.xx, PHP 4.3.0, and mySQL 3.2.3.56.

Now, I've got the install.php script running fine, but things choke when it tries to communicate with mySQL.. I get the following error message:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /home/users/www/htdocs/virtual/test/yabbse/install.php on line 351


Now, I'm completely new to mySQL, but from what I've read, and working through a few utilities, I've got the daemon up and running, and have created the user account I want YABBSE to use when communicating with it, but so far, nada. I can't get past this step.

Suggestions?

Before you can start the board installation, you need to create a db and a db user. Furthermore you need to grant this db user permissions for the db.

Did all that - created users and so forth.

Is PHP compiled with MySQL support?  If not, you'll need to recompile it and then restart your web server.

Bingo - forgot to roll mySQL support into PHP.
