"New Post" notification via Aim/y!/msn

Some of my users are requesting the ability to have a "New Message" notification sent to them via AIM, Y! Messenger, etc. (Whatever service they're signed up on).

My thinking was something along the lines of:

1) User can select whether or not to be notified of new messages
2) User can select whether or not to receive the whole message or just the subject line
3) Message notification includes name of poster and date of post ("Foodly-Doo-Doo posted 'Some message topic' on Friday, June 1, 2003")

Only ICQ can do this.  The rest you can't send messages via a script.

I remember seeing somewhere that there is a Perl module that will allow you to send messages over AIM. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to integrate/adapt it to notify people of new messages (but don't forget that the AIM message rate limiting is server-enforced, so if you have a very active board, you may run into problems with notifications being sent out too quickly).
