If I was to add a new IM feature that would allow people to backup their messages should I create a new table to store that? I've looked at the current table structure of yabb_instant_messages and it doesn't seem like it would work out.

Yes, you shouldn't really edit the main tables if you can avoid it :)

I have written IM Archiv for YaBB SE 1.4.x
IM BackupBox and IM Archiv the same is so quite.
I would be interested in your solution trial now, Gobalopper. can you send me your code?

I can't read German, but an IM archive mod sounds like a great idea. I've started saving mine to my hard drive and clearing out my in and outboxes on a regular basis because they seem to take much longer to load when there are a few messages in them, but I'd be most interested to know what this is all about! :)
