It isn't set properly.

Apparently your host is redirecting www to nothing.  Thus, the boardurl SHOULDN'T have the www on it.

So,

$boardurl = "http://apfmichigan.com/boards";

And you will be able to log in.

[Unknown]: In reference to the boardurl setting you mentioned, can you say this is a general statement?

Is this a standard setting everyone should do?

Or is this just something isolated to Jhinze's situation?

If you are having cookie problems, you should make sure the URL you are browsing at is the same as the URL you have set as your boardurl.
