A good idea indeed. :) I remember something like this coming about a long time ago for YaBB 1 Gold with an advanced IM system.

Perhaps the best way to handle this in the database would be to create a new table called "Buddies" (or something like that) and keep a record for each buddy association. Example:

     BuddyID | ID_MEMBER     |     ID_Buddy
-------------|-----------------|--------------------
     1       |         5        |           7
     2       |         7        |           5
     3       |         7        |           1

Meaning that 5 and 7 are mutual buddies, while 7 has 1 listed as a buddy but the reverse is not the case.

u dont really need to create a new table, a new column in members table should be enough...

what is a buddy list for?
only lists your buddies inside your IM center and profile?

I also like the idea from nemesis.

My idea is to create a new page where the members can see there buddy's i also like the idea from irbrian to add a aprove button. Then i like to have a table that shows aproved buddy's, Denied Buddy's, Wait for aprove and deleted Buddy's. I want to set up a board with advanced member setting so a buddy list will be great.

I think this will be very complex mod so i dare the Mod Team to create this one :P

I think that having the buddy list display on every page might be a little spammy, unless it was done in a simple format at the bottom on those pages, like the Users Online stuff at the bottom of the BoardIndex page :D

Personally, I think that there should at least be a single seperate page, that lists the buddy's Name in one column, the Online/Offline icon in another icon, a link to IM them in the next, and maybe a few other small informational things, like e-mail address, ICQ UIN, etc.. I don't think that your buddy list should be displayed on your profile, :P Though I do think that on other people's profiles, there should be an 'Add to Buddy List?' at the bottom of it, if they're not on your list, and something else for if they're already on your list..

Or, maybe something similar to the Memberlist, but for people that you choose/ask to add onto your list, but displayed only to you. *shrug*
