theres heaps of package servers u just got to know their url, no the point in this is so that you can be at someones forum ie: this one, and click on a link to the mod which will automatically add the server and connect to it or download the file one or the other. You see it just would make a popup which gives your server the command to goto th package manager.

Its just taking out the you going to your forum logging in and you adding the package server then downloading it, it will just auto add the server and connect to it or it will download the mod and add the package server to the list its better being able to skip the package server part as its quicker.

Also it would add the server so that you could see what other mods were there

I never really thought about that before, unknown. Having it the current way is sorta like saving you from yourself, linux style. If you went ahead and gave your forum username that kind of access, you could screw yourself up very easily. You've gotta make it harder than that to screw up your system. Your idea, no offense, is flawed(of course you'd have no idea what I was talking about if you don't know linux[or other *nix])

I think you will have to take those extra clicks as I doubt this will ever happen.

i know as its to easy to manipulate the script on your site to make them login differently oh well, atleast a popup that asks for your sites url and takes u to your site so you don't have to load up a browser and go to it that way.

I think everyone is either missing or ignoring the real problem. There are actually two sides to it:

1) Most Package Servers have to be added individually, and as tdodnz mentioned, you don't always know what or where they are without searching deeply through all the posts on this board. It is an unnecessary inconvenience.

2) Most Package Servers can only be trusted because you know the person it comes from. Anyone can create a package server with any imaginable kinds of mods on it, for good or ill.

So the solution, it would seem to me, is not instant downloading of mods (as that only solves the first part of the problem, and amplifies the second) -- nor is it to limit package servers to devs and mods, either intentionally or through trust issues (as that overlooks the first problem).

The solution is to CENTRALIZE THE PACKAGE SERVERS. The funny thing to me is that this has already happened, but its useless because no one uses the default package servers!!

I don't understand why we have to have 20 different package servers. Three is fine, 5 at the most, and even that may be excessive. Perhaps additional servers for splitting the load -- mirrors, in other words.

I say that all mods listed in the tracking posts in "Completed Mods" should be included on one of the DEFAULT package servers, and it should no longer be possible to add package servers. Instead, the Mod Team should be responsible for adding completed mods to those servers, and everyone who makes a mod should post it in Completed Mods, as happens now anyway. The Mod Team was originally formed for that purpose after all, or so I had assumed.

Yes, I know....

That is the very obvious solution, and it is my understanding that the Boardmod SE thing might have something to do with that....

Can you download a YaBBpak file and then upload it to your website and do the update that way? To me that seems like a good approach. The forum admin can still look over the mod before installing if they wanted or if they don't care/know just install it.
