What did I do wrong

I've been trying to do the standard install of SE 1.41.

So far I've had some varied success, on the first attempt I got stuck on step one......."incorrect filepath"

I eventually decided to remove everything from the host and start again from scratch, here's what happened:

I created the directory "yabbse" then changed the permissions (CHMOD 777)
I uploaded the files "yse141.ya" in Binary and "install.php" in ASCII to the directory.

This was fine but when I opened the browser (www.mysite/yabbse/install.php)

I got a blank screen with this:

SFU
ç³cxœ fpcd`g€ þ,p î

This has never happened before........on my first attempt, the installer actually started.

Does anyone have any Ideas what I did wrong?

change mysite to the url of ur site

if you did then i have no clue i'm also trying to install my YaBB

Open up notepad and copy and paste this into it

Save it as "phpinfo.php" (type the quotes too, please.) and upload it to your server.

Then either provide a link, or tell us how it looks.

Contact your host.. perhaps they can help you.

Also, you forgot to upload install.php.... it shows up as 0 bytes.

Er...that would be my fault that happened, I've sorted it out.

And I forgot to upload install.php......slaps forehead

On a more sobre reflection, that's not what happened.
I checked the files on the FTP and "install.php" was there.......the file size was 36bytes when it should have been about 20Kb.......don't know how that happened but it did.

I opened up the 36byte file with notepad and "SFU
   ç³cxœ fpcd`g€  þ ,p î" was all that was in the file, which explains a lot.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though, I've got the installer working again......step 3 is a problem since I don't know the details for MySQL but I'll get that info from domainnames.
