10 times higher traffic with SE over YaBB Gold ?

I run a forum with about 100 members, and when I ran it with Yabb Gold my bandwidth per day was around 17MB.  

Since moving to SE, it's been nearer 117MB per day !

My users love the new board, but is this traffic increase to be expected with SE ?

My bandwidth increased 10x from day 1 with SE.

The only image that I've added is a Flash graphic to replace the YaBB one (about 15K in size).  

Compression is enabled.

same template?  try replacing spaces to tabs or just removing whitespace altogether

i dont think your traffic could have increased that much, something wrong with your se that is causing bandwith to be eaten...

Well, I just checked the little box that says "disable output caching", and my traffic was dramatically reduced yesterday !

This may be a coincidence, so I'll keep an eye on it  :)

What does "output caching" actually do (or not do, as the case may be) ?

That didn't cure it !  Still running at 120MB a day for ~3000 hits a day - is that a lot ?  I've now replaced the logo with a 5K gif, and turned off all the button icons.

How do I install this zlib thing on an Apache server ?  Would turning the compression on when it's not installed cause more bandwidth ?

Sure sounds like a lot to me. ;)  So far this month I have 32k hits on one my boards and only 205MB of traffic for it. I do have the compression turned on though too. Switching from the Perl version to PHP significantly lowered my traffic.

If you are hosting avatars for your board maybe look over those file sizes too. Graphics add up amazingly fast. I have a bunch of them installed, but I keep them to 5-7k.

Flash is your problem dude, flash files can be quite large, and if your getting that kind of hits, it'll add up, it's not YaBBSE, it's your flash.

Disabling output caching will only up your bandiwdth - it means "reload every image, every page every time".

Also, what's the url to your site - I'd like to see if you're sending any expiry headers...

Get rid of that. Even though it's not filled in properly it could still be causing problems.

the proper syntax is that but with

content="NUMBER OF SECONDS TO WAIT, URL=ADDRESS TO LOAD"

I get over 40 gigs of transfer a month, but I am also getting well over 1,000,000 page views too.
