chmod question

OK I am moving my board from an IIS server to  a fresh install of mandrake 8.1 running Apache mod_perl and Mod_PHP.  I have this nice little server admin interface I have figured out, but I am not that keen on this file permission with *nix. I thought you could just rite click and chmod i.e. 777 and be done with it, but what I see is a Widows like permissions check boxes like windows, with the exception of having a executables entry that unless you have IIS is not an option in win32.
So what I guess I need to know is either how to chmod or what does 777 etc. relates to as a permissions.

777 would have all boxes checked.
