block users from specific threads...

Maybe this wouldn't be globally useful, but i'd like to see the ability (with possibly a button in the posts) to "ban" someone from posting in a particular thread.

This would be good for "muting" specific users in popular threads where they are posting annoying things but where you don't want to ban them or restrict the board to only one user class.

nice idea... maybe you could add a button in each reply, that says "ban"... by clicking on it, you'd get a new page with the option to ban the user from the thread, that particular forum or completely

this'd be very useful, cause right now it's a bit uncomfortable to ban ppl, this'd make it really fast

and if the person banning is not the admin, but a globalmod, then there could be an option where the admin'd be informed to approve the ban

I don't believe in banning users from posting, but I do see your point and why!

The moderator or administrator (In the old days SySop) should be the only ones with that option.

Allowing users to do it, could create one wild War Base!

oh, i would definitely only want it for admins, not even global mods...

I think the idea of a "ban" button in each user's post that would only apply to that thread would be extremely useful to me at least but I don't know the technical side of how difficult it would be to implement

Using your idea, perhaps as an abuse button, where if a simple "form text" such as 'This user is being abusive' sent to the moderator of the thread, or administrator may be feasable.

that already exists... it's the "repot to moderator" link at the bottom-right corner of each message ;)

about only allowing admin but not globalmods, there could be an option to choose what groups would have the priv to ban

I don't give globalmod status to just anyone, only people I really trust, and most admins are the same... I also know that it's a pain to be the only one with this priv, banning, cause then you can't count on anyone else to help you with this...

if you can't trust globalmods that much, then you could use the ban approval system I mentioned, that way you'd take part, but only to click on approve ;)

Talk about looking with my eyes shut!  8) Maybe I should remove the shades.

Then I gusss I'm missing the point on what the need of a Ban button would accomplish, unless it's just the ability to give them a Snagglepuss.."exit stage left' :D

The point would be that sometimes there times when particular users continually post anoying things in particular threads.  I.e. a popular permanent thread.

This request would be for a thread ban button that would keep that user from being able to post anymore in that specific thread only.

I see, and who would be the God playing...your out-a-here.? The users?

If that's the intent, because some are being bugged by others, a nice God button would not be a good idea.

As a Sioux Indian, many wars were caused by too many Chief's at a counsel, and not enough Indians.

In that case, why have the option to ban users in the first place?  Occasionally the admins have to do what they're admins for.  :D

Of course this wouldn't be a public button, only admins would have it.  It would be ridiculous to even consider making anyone able to do that ;)

Ahhhhhh! Ok Jason, I see where your coming from.  ;D

My assumption was a Ban button for users in the posting area. ass-u-me!   :-X

Yes I can agree that as an administrator, or moderator, that could be a fast and clean way to do it straight off the thread. We had a function similar to that on Wildcat, and allowed us to set the time in days for being banned. Thus the user got the point, and if he.she promised to be decent, then restored.

If they pulled the same stunt again.... ;D

While I don't know the code, the only security issue woud be if it could be cracked by an irrate user, thus allowing them the same control. That became a major issue on Trillian with a similar function.

well... if someone manages to have that access, that'd be the smallest of the threats...

cause if the forum is giving the person that kind of access, then it's giving the person other globalmod/admin privs that are a lot worse

a ban you can un-ban, but deleted accounts or threads, that's an issue

worry not, though, YaBB SE is the safest forum there is, the team here finds the leaks before the nasty guys do, and they're always up-to-date about security threats, to fix them right away ;)
